What Are You Really Putting in Your Body When You Go Out to Eat?

It is a wonderful thing to go out to restaurants and enjoy good food with great friends, but what are you really eating. You are trusting your food in the hands of a person that may or may not be practicing adequate sanitation procedures. That thought alone is enough to warrant eating at home, but we still have to go out to eat sometime, right? Yes, we all need a break from cooking once in a while, but be warned, these are just some of the things you could be putting in your body when you enjoy your favorite restaurant.

Food Poisoning

The CDC states that just ten years ago, there were over 76 million cases of food poisoning in the united states. Out of that number 5,000 people died. It is currently estimated that 1 in every 4 Americans will get food poisoning each year. Food poisoning is often linked to poor sanitation habits or even improperly stored food. Where restaurants do work to keep these issues at a minimum, there are currently far too many cases of food poisoning these days.

E.Coli

Among the many possible infections, E. Coli seems to be one of the largest. E. Coli impacts over 96,000 people each year and out of that number an average of 31 people die. E. Coli infection often requires hospitalization however, diagnosis can be difficult. Symptoms of E. Coli include diarrhea, stomach cramps, and vomiting. These symptoms, unfortunately are associated with many other conditions as well. Food companies today, work to ensure food is E. Coli free, but as we can see with the number of recalls recently, some strains do slip through the cracks.

Salmonella

Another possible infection from restaurants is salmonella. Eggs, chicken, beef, eggs, vegetables, and even many frozen items could be hiding harmful salmonella. It is next to impossible to avoid all of these ingredients, but not to worry. Generally speaking, if the chef prepares the food properly and cooks it to the recommended interior temperature, risk of contracting salmonella from the food drastically diminishes. Restaurants also employ measures to ensure no cross contamination of ingredients occurs.

When dining at any restaurant, it is always recommended that you read the food rating score. Every restaurant in the United States is required to display their score to customers, so if you happen to not see it displayed, ask. The restaurant must show it to you.
